Forecasting the Term Structure of Variance Swaps

چکیده
Recently, Diebold and Li (2003) obtained good forecasting results for yield curves in a reparametrized Nelson-Siegel framework. We analyze similar modeling approaches for price curves of variance swaps that serve nowadays as hedging instruments for options on realized variance. We consider the popular Heston model, reparametrize its variance swap price formula and model the entire variance swap curves by two exponential factors whose loadings evolve dynamically on a weekly basis. Generalizing this approach we consider a reparametrization of the three-dimensional Nelson-Siegel factor model. We show that these factors can be interpreted as level, slope and curvature and how they can be estimated directly from characteristic points of the curves. Moreover, we analyze a semiparametric factor model. Estimating autoregressive models for the factor loadings we get termstructure forecasts that we compare in addition to the random walk and the static Heston model that is often used in industry. In contrast to the results of Diebold and Li (2003) on yield curves, no model produces better forecasts of variance swap curves than the random walk but forecasting the Heston model improves the popular static Heston model. Moreover, the Heston model is better than the flexible semiparametric approach that outperforms the Nelson-Siegel model. JEL classification: G1, D4, C5

The Term Structure of Variance Swap Rates and Optimal Variance Swap Investments
This paper performs specification analysis on the term structure of variance swap rates on the S&P 500 index and studies the optimal investment decision on the variance swaps and the stock index. The analysis identifies 2 stochastic variance risk factors, which govern the short and long end of the variance swap term structure variation, respectively. The highly negative estimate for the market ...
متن کاملAn Application of Genetic Network Programming Model for Pricing of Basket Default Swaps (BDS)
The credit derivatives market has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade. As such, there is a growing interest in tools for pricing of the most prominent credit derivative, the credit default swap (CDS). In this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm for pricing of basket default swaps (BDS). For this purpose, genetic network programming (GNP), which is one of the recent evolutiona...
متن کاملClosed Form Pricing Formulas for Discretely Sampled Generalized Variance Swaps
Most of the existing pricing models of variance derivative products assume continuous sampling of the realized variance processes, though actual contractual specifications compute the realized variance based on sampling at discrete times. We present a general analytic approach for pricing discretely sampled generalized variance swaps under the stochastic volatility models with simultaneous jump...
متن کاملUsing the hybrid Taguchi experimental design method – TOPSIS to identify the most suitable artificial neural networks used in energy forecasting
The use of artificial neural networks (ANN) in forecasting has many applications. Appropriate design of ANN parameters enhances the performance and accuracy of neural network models. Most studies use a trial and error approach in setting the value of ANN parameters. Other methods used to determine the best structure of a neural network only use a single evaluation criterion to determine the ap...
متن کاملPricing of Volatility Derivatives using 3/2- Stochastic Models
Analytic solutions are found for prices of both variance and volatility swaps and VIX options under new 3/2stochastic models for the dynamics of the underlying assets. The main features of the new stochastic differential equations are an empirically validated cν diffusion term, a nonlinear drift providing a balancing effect of a stronger mean reversion with high volatility, and for the case of ...
